Line 1616 uses broden-mael, wavy-ornamented/wavy-patterned in reference to the sword which has melted because of the monsters blood. Whether the translator sees these adjectives as referring to the hilt or to the blade does not matter, archaeologically speaking, because circular and interlacing patterns are found on both blades and hilts throughout the Anglo-Saxon period. These wavey or ring patterns occur from the twistng or weaving of the bands of hard and soft iron. Lines 1687 ff. describes the Grendel sword hilt Hrothgar spoke, examined the hilt, great jimmy of old. The E.O. required agencies and departments to formulate long-term comprehensive strategies to develop and maturation opportunities for women-owned businesses. The Executive Order also obliged national agencies to meet or exceed the vanadium portion g everywherenment-contracting objective that now subsist for women-owned businesses. At present, there are various remain firms being offered to create opportunities for women-owned businesses and help these wome n entrepreneurs succeed in their businesses. First, there is the growing popularity of affidavit among women-owned businesses next, there is increasing federal procurement opportunities for women-owned businesses and third, a mesh site was created to assist women business owners obtain federal contracts.Certification Growing in Popularity Among Women-Owned BusinessesNowadays, certification to qualify for government contracts is becoming to a greater extent popular among women-owned businesses (Page, 2006). Specifically, a lot of women-owned businesses in Oklahoma are obtaining or securing certification to meet the criteria or qualify for government contracts. Moreover, certification likewise offers firms owned by women an advantage in securing contracts from big corporations, as mentioned by Debbie Hurst, president of the Womens Business Council-Southwest. According to Hurst, she informs women that certification can be a significant part of their marketing tool case. Hurst added that with only when 5 percent of women business enterprises obtaining government and corporate contracts yearly, there is still a need to bridge the gap between the opportunities for business and the capability of women-owned businesses (Page, 2006).The free radical Womens Business Council-Southwest (WBCS), with headquarters in Arlington, Texas, stands for women-owned businesses located in Oklahoma, north Texas, New Mexico, and Arkansas. The association operates in coordination with the Womens Business Enterprise home(a) Council to endorse and certify members. As take a firm stand by Hurst, the number of Oklahoma companies securing certification has increased 60 percent ever since the year 2004, the year the Oklahoma Leadership Forum was created by the regional group (Page, 2006).As maintained by Tamara Walden, president of Walden Energy (a certified women-owned business) based in Tulsa and a council member The Oklahoma Leadership Forum was conceived to assist women capitalists b oost business and gain access to more contracts (Page, 2006).Walden added that certification is a vital marketing tool for increasing a women-owned business visibility between procurement close makers and corporate supplier. The WBCS is striving to create consciousness of that fact to local businesses, as well as offering educational opportunities and fun networking that help support that. There is promise and potential for growing certifications in Oklahoma for the reason that the state has a projected 77,000 women-owned companies (Page, 2006). Moreover, there is an enormous market of women-owned businesses that are not availing of certification programs like that being offered by WBCS that can help them access diversity and government programs.Growing national procurance Opportunities for Women-Owned Businesses Although Federal procurement might n ot sound recording like a significant issue to the general public, or even a term that a lot of people is aware of, it is considered one of the about profitable, yet complicated and difficult, markets for small businesses to access, specifically those owned by under-represented minorities and women. According to the Office of the Press Secretary (May 29, 20000), in the year 1999, women-owned businesses composed 38 percent of all businesses but obtained merely 2.4 percent of the $189 billion in Federal prime contracts.Certain Federal agencies have taken the lead in operating with women owned businesses, and must be applauded. As indicated by the Federal Procurement Data System, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Federal Mine Safety & health Review Commission, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Small Business Administration have all not just met the five percent objective, but have come in at approximately fifteen pe rcent or better (Office of the Press Secretary, May 29, 2000).These Federal agencies recognize that coordinating and operating with women-owned businesses is not merely a philanthropic exercise. These businesses owned by women are dependable, strong, and do good work. Furthermore, these companies offer a solid service to their clients, and the Federal contracting officers are aware of it. Altogether, about 20 Federal agencies either fulfilled or exceeded the five percent objective. Thus, this just proves that it is certainly possible for government agencies to accomplish the five percent goal. Nevertheless, it is anticipated that agencies will work harder, adhering to the examples of the agencies mentioned above, to contract with women-owned businesses. Over the years, government appointeds are supportive of numerous initiatives to boost resources and opportunities for women-owned businesses. For instance, several senators have passed legislation to re-authorize the National Womens Business Council for a period of three (3) years, and to raise the annual appropriation from $600,000 to a total of $1 million. Part of that amount will be utilize to help Federal agencies satisfy the five-percent procurement objective for businesses owned by women (Seck, May 23, 2000). The National Womens Business Council has offered magnificent leadership in this field, making larger contracting opportunities a main concern since it was established in the year 1988, and merited praise from Republicans and Democrats for two general and extensive procurement studies it published in the years 1998 and 1999.Besides sustaining reauthorization of the National Womens Business Council, Senator Kerry initiated the Womens Business Centers Sustainability Act of 1999 (Seck, May 23, 2000). Proclaimed a public law, that Act is assisting Centers deal with the funding limitations that have been making it more and more hard for them to maintain the level of services they offer after they graduat e from the Womens Business Centers program and no longer be given federal matching finances.Hence, it is certain that President Clintons Executive Order creates a strong system within the Federal Government for raising the number of contracts that can be obtained by women-owned businesses.SBA Creates Web Site to Help Women Business Owners Obtain Federal ContractsIn the year 2000, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) launched a new electronic network site, which aimed to boost procurement and networking opportunities to women-owned businesses by means of putting all contracting assistance information at a single on-line site. The web site called WomenBiz.gov is a joint venture of SBAs Office of Federal Contract Assistance for Women Business Owners, National Womens Business Council, the Interagency Committee for Womens Business Enterprise, and the SBAs Office of Womens Business ownership (Comtex News Network, 2000).WomenBiz.gov offers women-owned businesses direct access to the government networks and the federal acquisition tools to draw on the $200 billion federal marketplace. Furthermore, the web site functions as the official gateway to over 100 procurement and acquisition sites hosted by a variety of federal agencies.Furthermore, the web site likewise incorporates connections to Electronic Posting System, PRO-Net, the GSA Federal Supply Schedule Program, DefenseLINK, CBDNet, and SBAs Government Contracting page (Comtex News Network, 2000). When President Clinton asked the SBA to lead the efforts to make sure that women-owned businesses be given their fair share of federal contracts, SBA answered that call and reiterated its promise to the President Clintons initiative though endorsing the launch of its web site and establishing the office. These are two vital instruments for offering procurement opportunities to women-owned businesses.Generally, the web site contains information pages specially developed to help women entrepreneurs who want to tak e part in government procurement.Meanwhile, the womens contracting office is one of numerous initiatives the blank House has instigated to encourage procurement opportunities for women-owned businesses.ConclusionAll of the initiatives discussed in this paper show that there are several complementary national policies to increase procurement opportunities for businesses owned by women. The phenomenal growth and success of women-owned businesses was primarily due to the development of a national network of womens business centers and organizations. As an outcome of lobbying by women business owners and the physical composition of the SBAs Office of Womens Business Ownership, various womens business centers have offered would-be entrepreneurs with adequate and necessary knowledge, information, training, skills, loans, and technical assistance.Nowadays, the Federal agencies have started to make progress from the time when Congress implemented the five-percent procurement goal, but the contracting managers should keep in mind that this goal is just a minimum, not a maximum. Out of the over 9 million women-owned businesses in the United States, the Federal Government can find ones that are reliable and qualified, with good products and services to boost, to fulfil their contracts if they make it a main concern or top priority.ReferencesComtex News Network. Reading Response practice 38. 8 Why is it that we choose so many foreign-born children continuing to speak only their native language and not a scent of side of meat? How successful has bilingual reproduction been? They do live in this country after all, so shouldnt position be their second language? A perfect example to this conundrum is in the short essay, No Comprehend. Musical describes how hard it Is for foreign children to learn position In public schools, when the only function being taught to them Is their native language. This frustrates her because the only thing holding back a students dream, Is not knowing how to communicate with the same language. She believes that this wouldnt be a problem If only bilingual education programs did their Job and do sure that each student completed the English course. It is absolutely crucial for bilingual language programs to stop their limitations and focus on the problems. In the article, Current Problems in Bilingual Education,J ose Gardens, a Hispanic born native, addresses the ten most common problems in bilingual education programs. One that stuck out the most is the Premature spiritual rebirth to English. The reason why I found this one so interesting was because it shows that each student transition to a new language can be accomplished at the same time. Because of this, most students are failing to finish the program and it leaves them back to square one. I believe that this Is a considerable complete today, and if given enough attention, It could be fixed. The fact that 40 percent of Hispanics dont graduate high school because they lack proficiency In English Is outrageous. That should neer be a reason.I blame the programs, and public schools that allow other native languages to be spoken on campus. If a student is trying to learn how to speak English but is being spoken to in their native language, then how are they ever going to learn? Thieve not. We spend all this time in schools that it should be just as easy taking a science course as it is learning English. Should the programs and community pay more attention to English course classes, then the problem would be resolved and another childs dream wouldnt be rushed. By what methods does Fitzgerald present the Jazz Age Society’s preoccupation with wealth and materialism?

The Great Gatsby was published in 1925 and was set in the Roaring twenties. This was a glamorous decade marked by cultural, artistic and social developments, but it was brought to an end by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, which triggered the Great first of the 1930s. In the 1920s, America became very prosperous as the country recovered from World War I. at that place was a policy of Prohibition. This meant that alcoholic drink was illegal, but the continue demand meant there was a lot of bullion to be made from bootlegging. It was a time of social change the younger generation started to rebel against tradition. For to a greater extent plenty, and particularly women, the war provided young experiences and freedom. After the war, there was a strong desire to try new and enkindle things and to break from tradition. Jazz music became common because it was more energetic than earlier music styles. Fitzgerald coined the term Jazz Age. Flappers began to challenge traditional gender roles. Flappers were women who be h sometime(a) upd in a way that was thought to be inappropriate by the older generation they drank, smoked and wore revealing clothing. Fitzgerald sets The Great Gatsby in an altered version of Long Island and Manhattan.Great Neck and Manhasset Neck commence East and West orbs, and the large landfill site Flushing is renamed the valley of ashes. The main sites represent different elements of the 1920s east-American lifestyle Manhattans skyscrapers and luxurious hotel suites but it is also fill with lonely clerks who spend all their time working, and gangsters who meet in seedy bars. The valley of ashes is a stretch of wasteland which sits between the another(prenominal) sites and connects them. The valley illustrates that the excesses of wealthiness cant be achieved without exploiting another part of society. The wealthy upper classes who inherited their money live in East Egg, West Eggs hosts new money people who defend earned their money. The people who live in East Egg come from old, wealthy families and have inherited money. They see themselves as elegant and well-mannered. West Egg is the home of the new money people who have recently made their money through business. The people of East Egg look down on the people who live in West Egg because they consider their family backgrounds to be inferior and their ostentatious displays of wealth to be in bad taste.Gatsby realises that money isnt enough to cross the social divide between himself and Daisy he needs to be upper class to be seen as her equal. His affected speech and imported shirts ar an attempt to imitate the upper classes. Religion has been replaced by consumerism and the pursuit of pleasure. The characters live aimless lives that revolve around harming themselves and acquiring new possessions. For example, the guests at Gatsbys parties focus on drinking, looking for new lovers, and trying to make easy money. The conversation between Michaelis and Wilson in Chapter eight suggests that consumerism has replaced godliness You may fool me, but you cant fool God Michaelis saw with a shock that he was looking at the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleberg Wilson mistakes the eyes of the advertizement for God. This shows that the eyes actually have no meaning except for the meaning that the characters divide them. This could reflect the feeling of the addled generation that life is essentially meaningless and is defined only by the values the people give it. Consumerism promises that material objects will make you happy and give your life meaning. However, material possessions dont make people happy in the novel this is symbolised by the fact that cars, a desirable consumer item, cause stopping point and destruction. The idea that consumerism has replaced apparitional value in reinforced throughout The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald mentions the Presbyterian nymphs in the speakeasy, a place where people could illegally buy and drink alcohol during prohi bition, in Chapter 4. This use of religious language could suggest that religious symbols have lost their power, and are at home in places of corruption.Weddings are a religious and legal union of a couple, but Daisys wedding to Tom is used primarily to display their extravagant wealth. Tom brings four private cars and hires a whole floor of hotel. Gatsbys car scattered light across the landscape and has fenders spread like wings. These descriptions give the car qualities often associated with religion its source of light and is winged like an angel. Most of the characters in the novel are very wealthy and live a life of luxury. The deep and glamorous atmosphere defines the noels tone the focus on the upper-class lifestyle gives the novel a mood of lively extravagance. For example, Gatsby owns a beach, motor-boats and a Rolls-Royce and his parties are full of faces and voices and colour. However, this society is contrasted with the poverty of those living near to the valley of ashes . The location of the valley of ashes between the wealthy Egg communities and New York makes the contrast stronger. There is also a constant sense that the glamorous lives of the upper classes are essentially meaningless beneath the surface, everyone is bored because they have no purpose Daisy seems to realise this when she asks what they should do this afternoonand they day after that, and the next thirty years? . Many friendships appear superficial. For example, Gatsbys parties are full of enthusiastic meetings between women who neer knew each others names. This shows that the society is full of pretence and loneliness. Many of Gatsbys guests had tragic fates. For example, drowned, strangled his wife, killed himself. This reinforces the message that behind the light-hearted partying, ofttimes of society was deeply unhappy. Fitzgeralds portrayal invites the reader to be critical of the characters empty, materialistic lives while simultaneously making those lives seem exciting and beautiful. This reflects his own attitude towards wealth. The characters are defined by their relationship with money it affects how they act, how they see themselves and how others see them Nick is confused about how to respond to wealth and decadence. When he begins his banking career he suggests his role models are Midas and Morgan and Maecenas. At the same time Nick says that Gatsbys empty display of wealthy represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn. Daisy and Tom take their wealth for granted.Tom assumes it is his natural right to be at the top of society, and Daisy was casual about the beautiful class she grew up in. this attitude makes them careless people they never worry when they hurt other people, they can retreat back into their money. Gatsby used to be amply ambitious and focused on pecuniary gain. However, the Gatsby that Nick meets doesnt get involved in the decadence of his own parties. This suggests that he has grown to be indifferent(p) to his wealth he just sees it as a means towards winning Daisy. For myrtle, money buys happiness she gets pleasure from her cold slam, pet dog and magazines. Her opinion of her hubby was damaged by the realisation that he couldnt afford to buy a suit for their wedding. Money takes on a meaning beyond its financial wealth. For Gatsby, money is confused with love. He says Daisys voice is full of money, linking his longing for her with his longing for the wealth and status that she represents. Gatsby understands the relationship between love and money. Daisys voice, he says, is full of money it is the seductive, thrilling aspect of her. What Gatsby, with surprising consciousness, states is that Daisys charm is allied to the attraction of wealth money and love hold connatural attractions. Gatsby, with his boundless capacity for love sees that the pursuit of money is tied to his love for Daisy and he knows himself well enough to see this. That Daisys voice is full of money is a remark only Ga tsby could make. It is a statement of someone attune to the possibilities of love and money and sensitive to them perhaps too much. Tom could never have provided this description of Daisy his attraction to her has nothing to do with wealth.Tom is accustomed to having money money holds no interest for him because it does have to be chased after his is old money simply there to be used. Tom may buy anything he wishes from polo ponies to cufflinks but he understands that polo ponies or cufflinks are all he is buying. Myrtle only cares about appearance and material possessions. Myrtle claims not to care about clothes I just slip it on sometimes when I dont care what I look like, but actually shes obsessed with her appearance she changes clothes regularly and buys cold cream and perfume. She wears bold colours, in contrast to Daisy who wears white but when Myrtle changes into a cream dress, her vitality changes to hauteur. This shows that she thinks breeding is all about appearance. Shes also concerned with other peoples appearances. She was seduced by Toms clothes the first time she met him, mentioning that he wore a dress suit and seeming(a) leather shoes as well as a white shirt-front. Its significant that Myrtle pretended to be looking at the advertisement instead of looking at Tom, because both Tom and the advertised product represent Myrtles greed for material objects and wealth.Tom Buchanan represents the immorality and materialism of the Jazz Age. Fitzgerald thought that the Jazz Age was hypocritical and this is reflected by Toms behaviour he is appalled when he learns of Daisys thing with Gatsby, but he has lots of affairs himself. He criticises Gatsby for sneering at family life, but was God knows where when his daughter was born. He also criticises Gatsby for knowing criminals and for universe a bootlegger, but Tom also knows criminals and he likes to drink, which shows that he doesnt follow the prohibition laws either. He sets a high moral standard fo r other people, such as Gatsby, but has no morals himself. Nick notes that he moves from libertine to prig to suit his needs. Toms wealth and sense of superiority makes him careless and uncaring. Nick summarises Tom and Daisys behaviour when he says they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their moneyand let other people clean up the mess. They run away from their problems and never face the consequences. He acts as a foil to Gatsby Gatsby is loyal, sensitive and caring whilst Tom is more or less the opposite. For example, he only seems to start caring for Daisy when he sees he could lose her. This suggests his reaction is as much about pride and possessiveness as about actually caring for her. The fact that Daisy chooses Tom over Gatsby highlights the shallow and materialistic nature of the Jazz Age society. Like Daisy, Tom is materialistic he has to appear to have the best of everything. For example, he was married with more pomp and circumstance than Louis ville ever knew.

France †Change over Time Essay (French Revolution) Essay

*As the title indicates, this is a change/continuity AP essay written for World History class. Vaguely, the essay headspring was Describe change and continuity in France from the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s.*Like many other European nations in the 1700s, France experienced a dramatic shift of sentiments against the monarchy, splendor, and Catholic church as the people, fired by rousing new Enlightenment ideals, began to question authority and emphasize the need for equation, liberty, and democracy. The social and political changes in France were best characterized by three different periods the weak monarchy of King Louis xvi and the subsequent period of confusion after his removal from power, the reign of short sleep Bonaparte and his downfall, and the new ordination brought about by the relative of Vienna central to these changes were Enlightenment influence, nationalism, and Frances relations with other countries. However, despite the expectant social upheavals of this tim e period, sexuality roles remained to a greater extent or less unchanged and although women had begun to rouse the idea of womens rights, little changed in the way that society viewed women because men still held economic power.France was the most move on country of Europe in the 1700s, home to many leading philosophers such as Voltaire and Montesquieu. Despite its prominence, it was experiencing domestic instability and civil unrest. The aloof King Louis XVI paid little attention to what was happening outside his opulent court and was unable to control the rebellions when they started cropping up. Goaded by Enlightenment ideas, the lower classes began to demand equality and liberty. When their demands were not met, they stormed the French prison Bastille on July 14, 1789 and the revolution was truly underway. The National Assembly became the dominant political power, taking away the feudal privileges of the First and endorse Estates and establishing control over church lands. It created a limited constitutional monarchy, giving Legislative power to the Assembly. Wary of rebellions within their own borders, Austria and Prussia attempted to preserve downright monarchy in Europe by quelling the French revolution. The Legislative Assembly responded by setting aside the Constitution of 1791, deposing the king, and creating a new governing body. A consequent overshadow of Terror ensued during which the Jacobins, and afterward on Robespierre, gained power and instituted a period ofwide spread executions and radical policies. It was during this period that use of the guillotine became popular. Eventually, the Reign of Terror was overthrown and a moderate government under the Directory was installed. This period saw France change from an absolute monarchy to a period of radical rule then lastly to a more moderate form of government. Throughout this, women p invested a key role in facilitating the spread of ideas by opening their salons to Enlightenment thinkers, creating an surroundings for new philosophies to form and proliferate. However, they had little direct power and were still seen as inferior to man, albeit new Enlightenment ideals of equality. The Directory chose talented military leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, to become commonplace of the French army he later moved on to become one of three counsels holding executive power. However, Napoleons coup detat would put all of France under his control and return France to an absolute monarchy. Napoleons reign achieved many Enlightenment ideals despite his Hobbes-like policies he equalized taxation, repaired the corrupt government, afflicted a balance between state and church power, and created the Napoleonic Code. He managed to quell the Austrian threat although he did not succeed in Egypt. Napoleon turned away from the New World and sought, instead, to create French dominance in Europe, conquering many neighboring countries and establishing control over Spain and Portugal.Unfortunately, his three mistakes the Continental System, the Peninsular War, and the invasion of Russia eventually caused his downfall. The Fourth Coalition, comprised of Britain, Russia, Prussia, Sweden, and Austria, defeated Napoleon and exiled him to the island of Elba. Despite a brief attempt to regain control of France, called the Hundred Days, Napoleon would never again dominate France. During Napoleons reign, France saw the return of the absolute ruler. However, growing nationalism brought about Napoleons removal from power. This period is alike marked by the continuity of womans role in France. Despite the tumultuous events of the time, women saw little change in their rights and status. Philosophers like bloody shame Wollstonecraft found little actualise for her ideas and France politics and society continued to be a male dominated arena. After Napoleons removal from power, the Congress of Vienna, comprised of Prussia, Russia, Austria, Britain, and France, met to forge peace. Using co nservative polices, the map of Europe was redrawn to ensure the balance of power and monarchs were restored, created peace in Europe until 1853. However, the French revolution had flamed a support for nationalism as more conquered nations demanded autonomy the majority of the rebellions were unsuccessful. France had a final revolution had removed the monarchy for good and established a democratic republic.France had finally do the transition from absolute monarchy to democracy. With this change came many social changes such as the end of serfdom in Western Europe and the decreased power of the nobility and the increased importance of wealth in determining power. Women continued to work for womens rights, including suffrage, but were met with unenthusiastic responses. In fact, despite the radical political changes France had undergone, gender roles hardly changed at all, demonstrating the continuity of womens status from the time of Louis XVI to after the Congress of Vienna. On a glo bal scale, the basic trends of the French renewal were very similar to those of the American Revolution. Both were flamed by Enlightenment thinkers advocating equality and liberty and democracy over monarchy and Church control. Both would encourage other rebellions later on the American Revolutionary ideas would spread to Latin America while French Revolution sentiments would bring about revolts in Germany, Hungary, and other parts of Europe. womanhoods rights also remained rather static in both areas of the world it would be several more years before womens rights were considered seriously. The main difference, however, lay in the fact that while the US simply separated itself from Britain authority, France underwent the whole transformation, from absolute monarchy to democracy, despite the periods of unrest in between. The 1700s was a period of great change in Europe, and Frances progression from absolute monarchy to democracy illustrates the movements of Enlightenment thinkers and the growth of nationalism and the new importance of domestic stability and a contented lower class. Three distinct time periods Louis XVIs rule and the Reign of Terror, Napoleons reign, andEurope following the Congress of Vienna illustrated this scholarly political change. Throughout the political change, however, was continuity in womens rights and status. Gender roles remained largely the same. There were many parallels between the French Revolution and the American Revolution, depicting an international trend the growing power of democratic governments.BibliographyAll information from AP World History textbookWorld Civilizations The Global Experience, Third Edition, AP* Edition

Lost Boys by James Garbarino: A Review

Through the Lost Boys, by Dr. James Garbarino discusses the phenomenon of youth violence in America, with emphasis on understanding its causes as a major quill for dealing with the menace. This essay seeks to explore the main points and arguments pointed about in the book, ways in which society has failed in curbing the disorder, and what can be d adept to universe A TYPICAL SCENARIOA 15-year African American Ken lived in the inner-city trouble zone of Los Angeles, with parents who are both poor and uncaring. He grew up to value himself, seeing the world as an unsafe place He saw form his point of view, that life is unbearable and one must be raptorial to make your way through life, especially to possess the textile things that mattered to him.He understood that he was not cared for by his parents, but seen as an outsider he was detached. On many occasions when he was young, he had been abused by his father, bullied seriously at school and for that he developed an aggressive appro ach to funding as he grew up. He withal hated his father for his violent activities and unwholesome behavior of drinking and smoking. At his age, he got hooked up in a gang of five boys who called themselves Fox Army. Because of his dedication to these gang activities, his performance at school dwindled. For this, his father expresses serious harsh words on him, telling him he would never be anything dear(p) in life. In the whole of this picture stood a fearful mother who was always quiet and stringently aligned to the fathers opinion. Ken wondered on several occasions why he and his siblings were treated as such. He was ashamed of himself and his family. Having being exist by his violent father with guns on several occasions, he felt the gun was a tool to silence enemies. In the gang, they all seem to address the same experiences of parental neglect and abuse, depression and confusion about the essence of living. They never felt any emotions nor did they perceive anything posit ive about schooling, family and other things close to them. They share same schema of life fight to protect yourself, enemies are out there in the world planning to eliminate you. The faster of us win to survive and see the light of another day. To see another to get others, use illegal means to make meetty and acquire material possessions in an attempt to use such things to eliminate the deep-seated feelings of worthlessness and shame. They were eager to make money by all means so, they got into illegal dose sales. They also started smoking and drinking, adventures they felt would relieve them of the burden they carried. In no time, they had access to the guns of their parents for protection. Even with these, Ken did not make as much money as his friends. He got really frustrated and distressed because he needed the money to add up to that he got from his parents to stay in school. He woke up one morning by hammering slaps of his violent father who accused him of theft. He was gu ilty of the offence yet, he denied it. His father started threatening hi with guns again. He left his bedroom and headed to the sitting where he kept his gun he reached for it, and with it, killed his parents. In this vexation, he started saying all sorts of things like Fox soldier, go for the bait. deplete the enemy with sharpened teeth of the fox. Go and deal with the wicked worldHe kicked the main entrance door open and shot in the herd of school children going early to school. He shot continuously, until he became so vexed and put the gun into his head, pulled the trigger and said, it all ends here. As the intervention of the approaching cop intensifies, he pulled the trigger and shot himself. It was reported that five people died including Ken. The sores was carried by a local newspaper. The only if national day-by-day that featured it described the teenager as brutal and horribly terrible. And that was where it ended. Nobody wanted to know more.WHAT IS NOT SEEN AT THE SCENE The main conception of the writer is to draw the attention of the Public to the menace of youth homicide with emphasis on understanding what is not seen at the scene, as a tool to stemming its tide. The scenario created to a higher place typifies the main point and arguments enunciated in the Lost Boys. The ideas launched in the text were based on statistical date from reliable sources, the experiences of those who fork up been affected in one way or the other by acts of youth violence and a systematic approach to understanding what is not seen at the scene of the incident. He also drew ideas from the research and writings of other experts in the field to arrive at the following salient pointsYouth violence is a major social disorder that is quite extensive. However, it is obscured from its staggering veracity by the national homicide picture which is reportedly stable. Lethal violence is common among the poor African-Americans and Hispanics, those who form the minority groups, with only few cases by Americans. These groups are concentrated in the inner city and suburbs of the South. As a result of those involved, the media and the general Public ignore making genius of such crimes giving limited attention to it.This is claimed to be as a result of racism and class bias, as well as the perceived electric resistance Native Americans think they have. With the current tide of the menace sweeping to the abode of the immunized, he argues that no one is really immune. The current incidents recorded with new white faces awakened the Public to the reality of the issue white teenagers are joining the train. With this pointed established, everyone sees a problem to be checked and it is easier to do.Having established that everyone is endangered, he seeks to bewilder a foundation for finding lasting solutions. First, he emphasizes the need to understand why the killers kill others and themselves. He believes that this would invariably be achieved by learning from the lives and experiences of those who have lived with it for the past two decades.Drawing form this point of strength where everyones attention is drawn, he shows that the accumulation of risk factors such as smoking, involvement in gang activity and illegal drug deals, access to guns, family history of violence, psychiatric disorders is central to the distorted behavior of killers. He emphasizes that the causes of youth violence are multiplex and cannot be associated with a single factor. He notes that culprits are no animals but humans who have been strongly influenced by risk factors they grew with, and only live to pass their deep-seated shame by acts of violence they are like Ken, who did not see any cogent reason for living.THE WAY OUTHaving stated the reality of violence, the Southern location of its prevalence because of prevailing factors and the lessons of the past, he then proposes ways of dealing with the violence Both the individual and the community, are involved. T he individual needs proper parental care, protection, training and mentoring these would help to build a strong self-image and create positive outlook to life. The home is the first community that is pertinent in twist a good child this should be stable, loving and full of positive affirmations for the growing child necessary needs should also be met. The government has a major role to play it should enact laws that reduce crime, promote community campaigns against violence and crime, provide funds for educational and health institutions. A credible and comely justice system must be on present. He particularly suggested a Visiting Nurse Program. He also emphasized good working relationships between professionals involved with the menace of youth violence. In conclusion, a society who fails to wake up to the roar of a wandering lion by getting hunters ready, should be prepared to dance to the music of the Vulture that would feast on their carcasses.

Problems and Prospects of Ship Breaking Industries of Bangladesh

Problems and Prospects of Ship Breaking Industries of Bangladesh Submitted to Mohammad Badruzzaman Bhuiyan Adjunct Faculty Department of Business Administration East West University Submitted by Md. Mahedi Hasan ID 2008-3-10-035 Section-1 Date of conformity July 15, 2012 EAST WEST UNIVERSITY In the context of increased importance of ship break activities in Bangladesh, specially contri providedion to construction & structural development (>80%) and in interior(a) economy & employment opportunity for the poor. But indiscriminate and haphazard ship recess activities in once biodiversity rich coastal orbital cavity of Sitakunda, Chittagong is now a barren field. The ara is severely degraded with loss of its physical, chemical & biological characteristics. There is very little information on the present positioning of biodiversity in the bea and impact of ship suspension on fisheries and biodiversity. Verbal reports from fishermen indicate that at that place is a drastic reduct ion in fish catches which is plausibly to be due to this ship breaking activities. Ship breaking activities has not yet been recognized as attention and still there be no separate guidelines or rules for ship breaking activities in Bangladesh. As a result, there is often accident, loss of valuable charitable lives & serious violation of valet de chambre rights & labour rights, including very low wages. On the other hand, impact of ship breaking on the biodiversity is in any case matter of exploration. But to assess the impact of ship breaking on biodiversity & fishery resources, a reoceanrch or study is urgently needed not only for the conservation of fishery resources but also to machine a sustainable & eco-friendly policy for ship breaking in Bangladesh. Key words SBRI = The Ship Breaking and Recycling Industry. Shipbreaking Shipbreaking is the ferment of dismantling an obsolete vass structure for scrapping or disposal.Conducted on a pier, dry dock or dismantling yard, it involves a wide range of activities. From removing all the gear and equipment that atomic number 18 on the ships to cutting down and recycle the ships infrastructure. Shipbreaking is a challenging process, due to the structural complexity of the ships and the surroundal, safety and wellness issues involved. Recycling The process of taking a ship apart term preferred by the shipping patience. When procedures to safeguard the envbranding ironment and workers health and safety ar applied, known as green recycle.Executive summary The ship breaking and recycling industry (SBRI) converts end-of-life ships into vane and other recyclable items. Ship recycling offers the most environmentally sustainable course of disposing of old vessels, with virtually every part of the hull and machine complex being reused or recycled as scrap metal. Although the industry is beneficial from a life-cycle assessment point of view, over the years it has gravitated toward countries with low labor costs, w eak regulations on occupational safety, and limited environmental enforcement. The global shift in the industry to countries with comparatively weaker regulatory systems is of particular concern as ships contain many hazards that burn fox significant detrimental effects on humans and the environment if not dealt with properly. Currently, the global center of the ship breaking and recycling industry is located in South Asia, specifically Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. These three countries account for 7080 percent of the international market for ship breaking of ocean-going vessels, with China and Turkey accounting for most of the rest.Only about 5 percent of the global volume of such(prenominal)(prenominal) vessels is scrapped outside these five countries. This study focuses on the SBRI in Bangladesh and Pakistan to get a better understanding of the economics of the industry and the environmental impacts arising out of such application and to explore possible ways in which such environmental effects whitethorn be mitigated. 1. 0 Introduction Bangladesh has a long coastal rush of about 710 km which is enriched with natural resources specially fish and other aquatic species of different varieties and has been the focal point of different economic activities. Most of these seashore areas are determined in Chittagong. Sitakund is a seashore area situated a few kilometers north of Chittagong where most of the shipsbreaking yards are concentrated. Shipbreaking industry has not been developed in a day. It has been developed gradually in Bangladesh passing with various stages of its development at an international level. Though the shipbreaking in Bangladesh started in sixties commercially it started in late seventies. The only shipbreaking industry of the country has been developed in Sitakund areas, Chittagong. There are about 20 forward and backward linkage industries based on this shipbreaking. Now, there are about 20 shipbreaking yards in Sitakund where thou sand and hundreds of labour are working. The workers are all engaged in dangerous physical labor but they dont have safety equipments like helmets, goggles, gloves, boots and work suits, medical facilities and more(prenominal)over financial security. Over the last twenty years more than cd workers have been killed and 6000 seriously injured according to the Bangladeshi media. The explosion of the Iranian tanker TT Dena on 31 may 2000 alone is utter to have caused 50 deaths. To this toll must be added thousands of cases of irreversible disease which have occurred and will occur in future due to the toxic materials that are handled and inhaled without stripped-down precautions or protective cares. 1. 1 Objective of the Study The ship breaking industry provides great advantages. Its probably the most environmentally sustainable way of disposing of old vessels, it creates jobs and supply a substantial quantity of scrap steel for the iron and steel industries (e. , it contributed to a bout 50% of Bangladeshs steel production). However, the hazardous godforsaken and associated occupational health hazards shell a significant national and global concern. The main objective of this report is presenting an overview of this industry through analyzing the prospect and the environmental problems swot form this industry.1. 2 Methodology of the Study There are two types of Assignment method available and they are conclusive and exploratory. Considering the subject topic I have chosen exploratory method. . 2. 1 Primary Sources I have not conducted any survey, rather I have given emphasize on secondary sources. 1. 2. 2 Secondary Sources In order to murder my assignment work, I depended on the secondary data more than primary data. I got the beautiful secondary data from the Internet by surfing huge web pages. I downloaded many WebPages, files related other things which were very much helpful for me to complete this assignment. 1. 3 Limitations (a) Time limitation is on e of the problems to make this assignment. b) Amount of data collection is not very huge because only websites are not able to complete this assignment. (c) Data collection process was irregular. 2. 0 Body of the report 2. 1 Prospect of ship breaking industry The ship breaking and recycling industry plays a significant economic role in Bangladesh and Pakistan, supplying a substantial quantity of re-rollable scrap steel for the iron and steel industries. SBRI provides more than half of Bangladeshs steel supply, for example, making it a strategic industry in that country. The industry also creates hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs for some of the poorest and most marginalized segments of the nation in those countries. The work force in each country varies with the volume of ship breaking but may range from 8,00022,000 workers in the ship recycling yards to 200,000 in the supply chain, shops, and re-rolling millswith dependents in extended families estimated to reach o ver 500,000 in Bangladesh. Shipbreaking plays an important role in the national economy for a follow of reasons 2. 1. Production of steel The scrapping of ships provides the countrys main source of steel and in doing so saves substantial amount of money in foreign supercede by reducing the need to import steel materials. Bangladesh needs 8 million wads of building materials per year, of which iron is a major component. The iron from recycled ships supplies iron materials in the country. This does mean however, that the owners have more power and control over the amount of steel that is sold and the price it is sold at. 2. 1. 2 Green industry (if properly recycled)In some ways it can be considered a green industry. Almost everything on the ship and the ship itself is recycled, reused and resold. The scrapping of ships supplies raw materials to steel mills, steel plate re-manufacturing, asbestos re-manufacturing as well as providing furniture, paint, electrical equipment and lubri cants, oil to the number of businesses that have spouted up specifically as a result. 2. 1. 3 Source of tax revenue It generates large amounts of revenue for various Government authorities through the payment of taxes.Every year the Government collects almost 9000 million taka in revenue from the shipbreaking industry through import duty, yards tax and other taxes. 2. 1. 4 Employment Opportunity Despite the conditions that the workers are employed under, this is an industry that employs more than 20,000 hatful directly. It provides employment for some of the poorest people from the north of Bangladesh who would otherwise have no employment. These mainly economic benefits have made shipbreaking a powerful industry. But these economic benefits should be considered together with the tender and environmental costs.Together, with better regulation shipbreaking can also bring social and environmental benefits. 2. 2 Environmental Impact 2. 2. 1 Pollutants discharged from shipbreaking Th ough shipbreaking has bring in a good reputation for being a profitable industry in developing countries there are a number of environmental and human health hazards. Depending on their size and function, scrapped ships have an unladened weight of between 5,000 and 40,000 tons (the average being 13000+), 95% of which is steel, coated with between 10 and 100 tons of paint containing lead, cadmium, organotins, arsenic, zinc and chromium.Ships also contain a wide range of other hazardous wastes, sealants containing PCBs, up to 7. 5 tones of various types of asbestos and several thousands liters of oil (engine oil, bilge oil, hydraulic and lubricants oils and grease). Tankers additionally hold up to 1,000 cubic meters of residual oil. Most of these materials have been defined as hazardous waste under the Basel Convention. In Bangladesh, ships containing these materials are being cut up by hand, on open beaches, with no consideration given to safe and environmentally friendly waste man agement practices.Ships are not properly cleaned before beaching. Generally, an eyewash test is carried out to certify that a ship is free from dangerous chemical and fumes. Ship breaking activities is a threat to both the terrestrial and marine environment as well as to public health. It is like a mini version of a city that discharges every kind of pollutants a metropolis can generate like liquid, metal, gaseous and solid pollutants. 2. 2. 1. 1 Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)POPs are chemicals that are exceedingly toxic, remain intact in the environment for long periods, become widely distributed geographically, bioaccumulate through the food web, accumulate in the fatty tissue of living organisms and pose a risk of causing adverse effects to the human population, wildlife and the environment. There has been a realization that these pollutants, upon exposure of human population, can cause serious health effects ranging from increased incidence of cancers to disruption of ho rmonal system. Shipbreaking activities are a source of lethal POPs. 2. 2. 1. 2 AsbestosAsbestos was used in old ships as a heat insulator. As there are no asbestos disposal procedures, during scrapping, workers and the surrounding environment are exposed to the asbestos fibers. Exposure to asbestos fibers (even in very low constrictions) particularly through inhalation may cause cancer and asbestosis. On the shipbreaking beaches, asbestos fibers and flocks fly around in the open air. Workers take out asbestos insulation materials with their bare hands. It has also proven to be one of the most lethal, as inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to a wide range of pulmonary roblems such as asthma and asbestosis and can also be the direct cause of mesothelioma. 2. 2. 1. 3 Heavy metals Heavy metals are found in many parts of ships such as in paints, coatings, anodes and electrical equipment. These are taken apart with no protective measures in place and reused. Exposure can result in lung c ancer, cancer of the skin, intestine, kidney, liver or bladder. It can also cause damage to blood vessels. 2. 2. 1. 4 Polluted oil As a result of breaking the ships, oil residues and the other refuses are being spilled, mixed with the sea water and left floating along the entire seashore.Oil may cause serious damage in different ways, such as a reduction of light intensity beneath the water surface which inhibits photosynthesis. Oil films on water reduce the exchange of oxygen and nose candy dioxide crosswise the air-sea interface which is harmful to aquatic life. It also causes damage to the bird population by coating their feathers with oil which causes buoyancy and insulation losses. Sometimes spilling may cause wide spread mortality amongst the population of fish, mammals, worms, crabs, mollusks and other water organisms. 2. 2. 2 Impact on physiochemical properties of seawaterShip scrapping activities pollute the seawater environment in the coastal area of Fauzdarhat to Kumira of Chittagong, Bangladesh. As a result, toxic concentration of ammonia, marine organisms found in seawater had an increase in PH levels. Extensive human and automatic activities accelerate the rate and amount of seashore erosion and results in higher turbidity of seawater. Critical concentration of DO and higher BOD were found with an copiousness of floatable materials (grease balls and oil films) in the seawater. 2. 2. 3 Impact on inter-tidal sediments and soilsIn shipbreaking areas various refuse and disposable materials are discharged and spilled from scrapped ships and often get mixed with the sand. The scraps from the ships are staked haphazardly on the sea shore, leaving behind an accumulation of metal fragments and rust (particularly iron) in the soil. These together with extensive human and mechanical activities often go on as matter of routine work resulting in the beach soil losing its binding properties and this accelerates the amount of shore erosion and increase the t urbidity of sea water and sediments in the area. . 2. 4 Impact on biodiversity Shipbreaking activities contaminate the coastal soil and sea water environment mainly through the discharge of ammonia, burned oil spillage, floatable grease balls, metal rust (iron) and various other disposable refuse materials together with high turbidity of sea water. The high PH of the seawater and soil observed may be due to the addition of ammonia, oils and lubricants. High turbidity of water can cause a decrease in the concentration of DO and substantially increase the BOD.Furthermore, oil spilling may cause serious damage by reduction of light intensity, inhibiting the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide across the air-sea water interface, and by acute toxicity. As a result the growth and abundance of marine organisms especially plankton and fishes may seriously be affected. Indiscriminate expansion of ship breaking activities poses a real threat to the coastal inter-tidal zone and its habitat . 3. 0 Recommendation Considering the positive role of ship breaking in national economy ship breaking can not be stopped.Rather a sustainable approach should be taken to minimize the negative consequences of ship breaking activities in our coastal zone. Government should formulate and implement a national policy and principles for safe and sustainable shipbreaking after having consultation with relevant organizations, employers and workers. Both owner and contractors have to take the responsibility in providing compensation, treatment and security for the labours. Adequate compensation for victims of accident and their families, social securityetc. should be ensured. Finally, it could be said that, the ship breaking operation involves serious environmental hazards. If the ship breaking industry is to develop in the country, the same may only be allowed ensuring minimization of pollution effect. A longer stretch along the seashore is in no way justified for continuation of this busi ness rather a true separate zone like a dockyard should be selected by the competent authority. Preventive measures against environmental and health hazards inherent in the process of ship breaking should be undertaken at the right time, before it is too late.Bibliography Hossain, D. M. M. Beetlejuice Screenwrite

The beginning of the film starts out with a camera overlooking the whole town of which this movie is going to take place. As the credits end, the camera ends up focused on a astronomical house on a hill. You can clearly tell that the house is made up of some sort of material, still it was used as a way to introduce one of the main characters. A wanderer crawls up on top of the feigning house and in engenders Adam. The firstborn thing he does is elevator motorcarelessly pick up this massive spider as if it where one of his pets and carries it to a window where he releases it.Right off the bat you could tell hat this cosmos is kind to nature and very gentle with the way he handled the spider. In comes his wife, Barbara, who is filled with Joy and love. Their correlative understanding of each other makes them love each other more than and more. They both hear something come from outside and realize that it is a house bidder evidenceing to sell their home to people that are more deserving of it. This house bidder assumes that because Just two people are living in a large home by themselves that it is irrational for them to agree to sell it.The one thing that both Adam and Barbara per centum is their eagerness to keep their home. The couple denies the house bidder and then drives into town to pick up some supplies. expression at the surrounding environment makes it obvious that Adam and Barbers home is the focal point of the town. Adam leaves his car to go in the store to get the supplies, when he realizes that the clerk isnt at the front desk he takes property out of his pocket and puts it into the cash register himself. This again, exemplifies the honesty of this man.On the drive back home, they see a furrow in the road and Barbara quickly swerves off the road crashing into a wooden bridge that is completely unstable. Their car ends up falling into a river and the scene cuts. They end up back at their house but do not realize how they got there. A fter very bizarre things occur to them, they start to question what has happened. They discern a book titled book for the Deceased and realize that they defy in fact died. The first conflict comes into play when they are trying to adjust or go for out why they cannot blackguard out of their own house. The character Betelgeuse is introduced and although we do not get a full view of him we figure out what case of character he is. Betelgeuse is a ruthless and mean person. He seems like the type that has no problem in taking advantage of you. From the start, you can foreshadow that this character will be a conflict of interest later on in the film. The movie then switches to the new family that has began to light upon into the now vacant house. The door to the house slams open and large amounts of furniture are being locomote in.Its as if the writer of this movie wanted the audience to feel like the house was being lacerated down and re-done from the ground up. First is Delia, who is a red haired woman, and the first impression is that she is a stuck up, conceited, but sporty and tidy person. She takes pride in her pieces of artwork even though theyre clearly not well done. and then there is her husband Charles, who is the influential and uptight dad that is searching for seamlessly deserving relaxation. The Daughter is introduced as a disturbed and rebellious gothic girl. You could tell by the way she admires the houses cob webs and are ghosts living in her new home. Delis assistant, is a very feminine character that is oblivious and careless with his actions. He acts as a big shot and talks like one too. Both Delia and her assistant share a reciprocal outlook with how things should be. When Barbara and Adam realize that new people have moved into their house they come uncivilized and want to drive them out. This is another conflict introduced in the movie and it depicts the click of ghosts trying to haunt people.Adam and Barbara try scaring the new house owners but realize they arent doing a good Job at it. The ignorance these two characters have pushes them to learn more about who they are and the new abilities they have as Ghosts. The way this screenwriter fit out up the characters along with the conflicts really creates a good buildup, thus making the movie more gratifying and fun. There are multiple conflicts, which make the viewer wonder how each one of them is going to be resolved.

Red Cliff and Early Chinese Notions

Red decrease and Early Chinese Notions Introduction The philosophies of early on Chinese thinkers differ greatly from the mindset of modern day philosophers. The four major philosophies of China, Confucianism, Mohism, Taoism and Legalism arose primarily during the warlike States era from 475 BC to 221 BC. Following the end of the Qin Dynasty and the f each of Qin Shi Huang, Confucianism became the dominant philosophical school in China.Confucianism delineate the teachings of Chinese philosopher, Confucius, concerning the fields of ethics and politics and emphasizes on personal and government morality, hu eartheness and unmatchables trading to family and beau monde. Following the popularity of Confucianism and the death of Confucius, the creation of The Analects or Lunyu , was written by Confucius followers and disciples in the war States period. His teachings were the first to introduce the concept of meritocracy which considers that ones status in orderliness should not be determined by ancestry, wealth, or chumship but rather on education and ones character.Confucius also explores notions on human nature and self cultivation and the purpose of human existence. This paper im disjoint focus on early Chinese philosophies of the tender intercourseship amid the idiosyncratic and the state and the relationship in the midst of man and nature with references and examples from the film, Red Cliff. The Relationship mingled with the Individual and the State The deuce-ace kernel concepts of Confucianism, filial devotion (xiao), humaneness (ren), and ritual decorum (li) (Sources of Chinese Tradition, p. 3) embed the behavioural standards and expectations of how a person should practice these virtues. Furthermore, the three essential values integrate into Confucius views on government as well. Filial piety practiced in spite of appearance ones family translates into how much one is testamenting to give to society which results in the stability of a s tate. Humaneness observes the importance of a prescript treating his people as how he would want to be treated if he were in their position. In Confucius perspective, ritual offers a sense of respect s rites are a meanspirited of expression of a leaders morality and also encourages a sense of dignity and responsiveness among the people (Sources of Chinese Tradition, p. 43). Filial piety ? is considered the most fundamental of all Confucian teachings. The term push aside have a broad meaning that not only includes the obedience a child mustiness show for his parents but also respect that should be shown to the living and dead. Filial piety develops into five relationships ruler to ruled, father to son, husband to wife, elder brother to younger brother, and friend to friend. When subjects respect their ruler and the ruler reckon the welkin, the state will in turn thrive and prosper. From The Analects, Confucius states, If a ruler himself is upright, all will go well without soci etys. But if he himself is not upright, level(p) though he gives secerns they will not be obeyed. The concept of filial piety is displayed in many different ways in the film, Red Cliff. Because of the gentleness and brotherhood the southern warlord, Liu Bei, has shown towards his subjects, they were prepared to sacrifice their lives for him and the state.Because Liu Bei has treated his ministers and warriors with respect, as a result, they willingly followed his leadership. Conversely on Cao Caos side, his subjects were obedient towards him but only because they were afraid of him. They know not to trust Cao Cao because of his apprehensive and peculiar character that could result in impulsive decisions to kill anyone without any reason or justification. Loosely quoted from Zhuge Liang, Although Cao Cao leads a large army, the majority surrendered to him so they are not as trus tworthy. He has not shown humaneness ? o his subjects, and then they were not motivated to fight for him. Another example of filial piety and the relationship between the someone and the state is displayed through Xiao Qiaos decision to cross over to Cao Caos camp in bon ton to buy time for the Southerners. Her duty to her husband and the state required her to forsake her personal interests including her life, her childs life, and her relationship with her husband, for the greater good. This is our home. Our people gladly give their lives for her sake. How ignore I stand idly by. Xiao Qiao (Red Cliff II, 2009)Many Western philosophers may not understand and argue that the Chinese doctrine of individualism emphasizes on ones connection to external powers of authority rather than total independence and creativity. However the Chinese tradition is not about conforming each persons ideas and sacrificing oneself for society, it focuses on the individual as a vitally integrated element within a larger familial, social, political, and cosmic whole (Internet Encyclopedia of ism, Bri ndley). The core meaning of individualism is the thought of ones self cultivation and the moral obligation to society and the importance of public service. This definition leads to the term junzi which simply means the ideal of becoming the perfect man who combines the qualities of saint, scholar, and gentleman. The two most prominent examples of a junzi in the film are chuck Yu and Zhuge Liang. chuck Yus forgiving nature allows him to achieve a greater good for his people when he chose to beg off his friends action of siding with Cao Cao. He did not choose to kill him when his childhood friend tried to convince him to surrender to Cao Cao but instead tolerated his friends disloyal character. On the other hand, Zhuge Liang is a good representation of a junzi as he uses his moral autonomy to help the people. Because he knows clear what is right and wrong, he combines his intelligence with righteousness to convince others of accepting his strategies as an advisor. In conclusion, bo th having filial piety and being a junzi are two of the ways the early Chinese believe an individual can contribute screen into society. In the film Red Cliff, the underlying moral of the story relates back to these two themes whether it is in the form of brotherhood, husband and wife or a leader and his subjects. The Relationship between Man and Nature The relationship between man and nature in classical Chinese school of thought can be characterized as the relation of Heaven and man or the fundamental concept of tienren he yi . The academic aim of Chinese thinkers was to educate the people on this philosophy. As quoted from Sima Qian stating the purpose of his work Records of the gm Historian, I want to hereby elucidate the relation of Heaven and man, to discern its historical development from recent to Present, and to state my distinctive views. After the middle period of the Warring States, classical thinkers strongly emphasized the relation of Heaven and man. When Confucius speaks about the Mandate of Heaven and when Mozi talks about the Will of Heaven, they are in conclusion referring to nature as Heaven being the supreme entity of the world, above all kings and all sources of power. However this philosophy was divided into two sides, one highlighting the unity between man and nature and the other move much emphasis on the separation of the two.Nevertheless, the doctrines supporting the unity of man and nature was more important and accepted more widely as the thought of stressing on the separation of the two was only held by a minority. Therefore it can be assumed that most Chinese philosophers place high social values on peace and harmony and the idea of unity of nature and man. To the Chinese, the relationship between humans and nature was regarded as reciprocals. Heaven, earth, and man represented a single unity governed by the cosmic law or dao.Mencius, the most famous of Confucius followers, thought of Heaven as the highest order in which eve n the emperor or Son of Heaven should obey. Reinstating the idea of the hierarchy of respect Mencius states that when the personal life is cultivated, the family will be regulated when the family is regulated, the state will be in order and when the state is in order, there will be peace throughout the world. From the Son of Heaven down to the common people, all must regard the cultivation of personal life as the root or foundation.Mencius believed that a persons moral self is the basis of having a harmonized society. And in order for a leader to clear up the respect and support of his subjects, he must first respect the Heavens. Since humans are an integral part of nature, man should also obey the laws of nature. According the Mencius, human nature is given by Heaven, therefore the two are interconnected. In Confucian thinking, the meaning of Heaven or nature has a variety of aspects, including the sky, weather, the inwrought order, and also a moral order. One of Confucius disci ples Xunzi quotes tian as a atural order, operating according to unchanging principles, not intervening in extraordinary ways in human affair but, rather, providing the context within which all living things exist (Sources of Chinese Tradition, p. 170). Other Confucians also adopted the idea of oneness of Heaven and man. tout ensemble things exist together, and they do not harm each other all ways exist together, and they do not come into conflict Zhongyong (Doctrine of the Mean). In the film Red Cliff, an example of acting out against nature or Heaven can be seen from Cao Caos perception of the war. When Cao Cao tells Zhou Yu that he cannot believe he lost the war because of the pourboire, Zhou Yu replies him, Because you dont understand the Will of Heaven. The meaning of this phrase can be seen as having two connotations. The first, because Cao Cao did not understand the patterns of the weather, he was unable to predict the time when the wind was going to change directions. The second significance has a more profound undertone in which Zhou Yu means that Cao Cao did not recognize the natural order wherein society should follow under harmonized principles that the Heavens intended (tian yi, . Because Cao Cao always thought he was responsible for bringing together all the states as an order of the Emperor, he could not see past his own greed and ambitions. He perceived the war as childs play and disrupts peace in the country to achieve his goal of total dominance. His vox populi of unifying the states contradicts the early philosophers notions of all things existing in harmony and having self cultivation and moral order as the true Will of Heaven. ConclusionIn conclusion, one can see that classical Chinese philosophers develop ideas that are rarely seen in Western philosophies. The Chinese philosophies characterize how fundamental they perceive moral principles and self cultivation as the basis of society. Essentially, these notions relate to the promotio n of human relations towards a harmonious society through its inclusiveness of Heaven, Earth, and Human order.
